Chromic acid can only exist in aqueous solution, if it is precipitated from the aqueous solution, it will immediately decompose into chromic anhydride and water. Chromic acid has strong oxidability. Contact with sugar, fiber, benzene, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide will react violently, and even cause combustion.
Chromic acid is most commonly used as cleaning liquid in the laboratory, both acidic and oxidizing, can remove the fouling and insoluble material of the inner wall and the outer wall of the experimental instrument. Usually the solution is obtained by adding potassium dichromate to concentrated sulfuric acid, but hexavalent chromium is harmful to the environment, and strong acidic conditions can sometimes damage instruments, so the use of chromate washes has been reduced.
Chromic acid can be prepared with oxidant. Many organic compounds can be oxidized by chromic acid, and many hexavalent chromium based oxidants have been developed. Jones REAGENT: AQUEOUS solution of chromic ACID, sulfuric acid, and acetone oxidizes primary and secondary alcohols to corresponding carboxylic acids and ketones, in which unsaturated bonds are not affected. Pyridine chlorchromate: Prepared from chromium trioxide and pyridine hydrochloride to oxidize primary alcohols to aldehydes. Collins reagent: Adduct of chromium trioxide and pyridine.
